POSITIVE ACTION for HAITI, Orphanage - Volunteer Team Member, Landscape Architect

AWB Seattle has been working on projects in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake, from volunteering on the ground to designing projects. Now AWB is supporting stronger communities by designing an Orphanage for children who have lost their family, one way or another, during the many difficulties Haiti has faced. The Orphanage is currently operating and accommodating 17 children, in a rented facility. However, they have been able to raise money and have purchased a piece of property in Gonaives, about 90 miles north of Port au Prince, where they wish to serve 30-40 children.

The Orphanage is striving to provide a home where kids can be safe and thrive. Additional activities at the orphanage will include growing and selling produce, and educational activities. The orphanage is operated by Haitians, with help by a US non-profit who is doing the initial fundraising and whose members helped the orphanage after the 2010 earthquake. The goal is for the Orphanage to be self-sustaining.

AWB is providing programming assistance, site planning, and building design. The project will emphasize sustainability in all its aspects, including utilizing local labor and materials. AWB works in concert with Engineers Without Borders – UW Chapter. The current team is looking forward to welcoming a landscape architect.
