NICOPOLIS TANZANIA

ALBINISM SUPPORT CENTER

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

This is a multi-phase project to create a center for people with albinism that is self-sustaining, safe, and therapeutic. The first phase is an orphanage for the most vulnerable children from 0-5, a clinic, and doctor and staff housing. Children with albinism are particularly vulnerable, as they may be rejected or abandoned by family members and may be killed or maimed in order to obtain body parts for the witchcraft black market. Buildings are designed using passive ventilation and shading principles, rainwater collection and urine-diverting toilets, and compressed earth block walls. The orphanage is designed as a series of single-story, house-like buildings arranged around a central courtyard with plenty of shaded outdoor play area.
